Blebees would like to introduce to you the functionality of the Levels and Curves adjustment commands in the Adjusment layer photoshop group.

Used to align the light and color of an image across bright, dark and neutral areas of the image.

Use Levels to adjust light and dark

Click Levels ... from the adjustment layer in the layers panel or go to Image> Adjustment> Levels ...

  • Select the composite channel (RGB or CMYK) in the Chanel section.
  • To adjust the shadows, drag the black anchor point from left to right, while the dark areas are darker and lighter.
  • To align the highlights, drag the white anchor point from right to left, and the lighter area becomes brighter as you drag
  • To align the neutral area, drag the anchor point left to enlarge the highlight, drag right to enlarge the shadow.

Note: bring the image back to the correct light by dragging the black and white anchor points to the two ends of the histogram chart

Use Levels for color correction

Select the channel you want to edit in the Chanel section.

  • Red: corrects the red (right) and cyan blue (left).
  • Green: corrects for green (right), magenta (left).
  • Blue: corrects the blue (right) and yellow (left) colors.

Note: Output Levels has the opposite effect of Input Levels

  • When dragging the black anchor point to the left, the dark area will be lighter, creating a blind layer on the image
  • When you drag the black anchor point to the right, the highlights get darker
  • Adjusting the Output Levels will reduce the contrast to create a low-contrast effect. Adjusting the Input Levels will increase the contrast over me

Curves command in Photoshop Adjusment Layer

  • Used to adjust the light and color of the image through the brightest point, the darkest point, the neutral point of the image, shown on the adjustment points corresponding to each color position on the image.
  • By default, the lighting and colors of the image are shown as a diagonal line on the map. The left column corresponds to the shadows, the middle two columns for the midtones and the right column for the highlights.
  • The horizontal graph shows the information Input Levels, the vertical chart shows the Output Levels parameter.
  • Curves Adjusment can be used on images with CMYK, Lab and Grayscale color systems. For the CMYK color system, the histogram shows the percentage of each color channel. For Lab and Grayscale, the histogram shows the light of the figure.

  • Click Curves… from the adjustment layer in the Layers Panel or go to Image> Adjustments> Curves
  • Select the composite channel (RGB or CMYK) in the Chanel section.
  • To align the highlights, move the adjustment point in the upper corner.
  • To adjust the dark area, move the adjustment point in the lower corner.
  • To align the neutral area, move the middle adjustment point.

You can create more adjustment points by clicking anywhere on the control bar. Or choose finger tool and drag mouse on the image

Use Curves for color calibration

  • Click Curves… from the adjustment layer in the Layers Panel or go to Image> Adjustment> Curves
  • Select the channel you want to edit in the Channel section.

Some notes for Levels and Curves

  • You can use the Eyedropper tool to click on the darkest, brightest or neutral point in the image to automatically adjust the color and light.
  • To define highlights or shadows on the image, hold Alt while dragging the highlight and shadow adjustment points
  • With the Curves adjustment bar, can add can add up to 16 adjustment points, giving results more detailed and specific than Levels.
  • Levels work on the principle of adjusting the area, giving more overall results, while Curves works on the principle of adjusting the points.
  • When editing in Photoshop, you should adjust Levels or Curves before adjusting any color correction commands
