On that fateful day, two torpedoes fired from a Japanese submarine hit the Indianapolis. The ship was broken in half. The crew, most without lifeboats, were thrown off or had to jump off the ship. 900 people wearing lifeboats swam across the waves. At dawn the next day, the sniffing sharks begin to approach the area. At first there were only a few, but then more and more came. They attack sailors, most of them tired of sunburn, hunger and thirst. Four days passed. When the lifeboat arrived at the scene, before their eyes was a horrifying sight: Up to 579 people were killed, some of them being crushed to pieces. 321 people were lifted out of the water still alive, but in the end only 317 survived.
